Back Pain and
Degenerative Disc Disease

Cellular Therapy Injections to Treat Intervertebral Disc Pain

Many patients have now had Cell TreatmentS for lower back pain especially lower back pain due to Degenerative Disk Disease

Biologic Cell Therapy Injections into the disc may calm the inflammation, reduce pain, and may help repair the flattened, brittle or protruding disc.  It is an alternative to surgical removal of the disc or fusion surgery.

Beginning at middle age, our disc degeneration begins with the discs losing fluid, flattening and becoming more brittle. The flattening of the discs can lead to arthritis of the small jointsof the back (the facet joints) as they lose their usual spacing.     As discs become more brittle, they can develop tears which can be a source of pain from the discs themselves.  The soft center of the disc (Nucleus Pulposus) is inflammatory and the fibrous ring (Annulus Fibrosus) has a lot of nerve endings.    A large tear in the fibrous ring can lead to a protrusion or extrusion of the soft center that may irritate a spinal nerve root causing radiating leg pains, commonly called “sciatica.”

Often, a painful disc will heal itself in a couple of months, but due to poor blood flow pain can become chronic.

How Does Cellular Therapy for Back Pain Work?

It is critical to establish the actual cause and specific location of your back pain before treatment. You will need an MRI of your lower back and a full new patient evaluation visit to us so we can establish or confirm the actual cause of your lower back pain. Then we can recommend the most appropriate treatment for you, which may be stem cell treatment for your back.

The aim of using Cell Therapy is to  support the self-healing process of the affected joints, reverse disease progression and suppress inflammatory reactions that can worsen pain, leading to symptom relief and recovery of function.

We use a patient’s own cells to repair the damaged spinal joints naturally. Regenerative cells exist in high concentrations in bone marrow which can be aspirated with minimal discomfort, and then injected into the damaged area of the spine

Platelet rich plasma rich in growth factors and can also be used instead of bone marrow aspirate in certain circumstances. It is obtained by a simple method of centrifuging a blood sample.

With the support of platelet rich plasma, regenerative cells may provide the precursor cells for repair and also change the environment in the spine from inflammatory to healing and regenerating.

Over time, the cells can potentially repair and regenerate the damaged tissues, resulting in relief of pain and improvement in mobility and function.

single cellular treatment should be sufficient to yield good results.   We do all our back cellular procedures under X-Ray fluoroscopic guidance to increase accuracy and decrease the likelihood of complications. This is especially important for all back injections and procedures.

We can also add Shock Wave Therapy, additional Cytokines and Supplements and alpha-2-Macroglobulin as needed.

Is Orthobiological Cell Treatment Right For You?

Although Orthobiologic Treatments are considered by some people to be experimental, various research studies show that cellular therapy and platelet rich plasma injections may provide excellent relief from joint and musculoskeletal pain and ongoing inflammation.
