Ultrasound Guided PRP Hydrodissection: An Excellent Non-Surgical, Treatment for Median Nerve Irritation

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through a narrow passage in the wrist called the Carpal Tunnel.

This tunnel is surrounded by bones and a thick ligament (the transverse carpal ligament). The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the hand, the Median nerve, is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist. In most patients, carpal tunnel syndrome gets worse over time.

Untreated compression can lead to more persistent symptoms and even permanent muscle weakness in the hand.

Common Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:

What Is PRP Hydrodissection?

PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, is made from a small sample of your own blood. It contains concentrated platelets and growth factors that help reduce inflammation and support tissue healing.

Hydrodissection is an ultrasound-guided technique in which the PRP is carefully placed around the median nerve to gently separate it from surrounding tissue. This reduces the mechanical irritation, improves nerve mobility, decreases inflammation and creates a healthier environment around the nerve.

When combined, PRP hydrodissection uses your own concentrated platelets to stimulate a natural healing response while also mechanically freeing the nerve from areas of tightness or restriction.

How the Procedure Works

The procedure is performed in-office using ultrasound guidance. A small blood sample is taken and processed to concentrate the platelets. The physician then uses ultrasound to identify the median nerve and precisely guide the injection around the nerve, freeing it up and creating more space around the nerve.

Because ultrasound allows direct visualization of the nerve, tendons, and surrounding structures, the treatment can be performed with a high degree of accuracy.

Who May Be a Candidate?

PRP hydrodissection may be appropriate for patients with:

Patients with severe nerve compression, significant muscle wasting, or advanced weakness may still require surgical evaluation.

Potential Benefits

Recovery

Most patients return to light daily activity shortly after the procedure. Temporary soreness, fullness, or aching at the wrist can occur for several days. We may recommend avoiding heavy gripping, repetitive wrist strain, or intense exercise for a short period after treatment.

Improvement is typically gradual as inflammation decreases and the nerve environment improves. It can take 4-6 weeks for the full effect of the PRP hydrodissection on the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

PRP vs Steroid Injection

Steroid injections may reduce inflammation quickly, but the effect is often temporary. PRP is designed to support a longer-term healing response rather than simply suppress inflammation. PRP hydrodissection also addresses the mechanical component of nerve restriction by creating space around the median nerve and providing PRP to stimulate a natural healing response.
